In 1969, while his brother-in-law Ravi Shankar was triumphing on the hippy scene, sarod player Ali Akbar Khan was practising his art for the love of music. Living in New York by then, he would play inside churches, like the one where this album was recorded. With perfect acoustics and an attentive audience, everything was set for a magical moment, and here it is captured on disc. The session was a performance of Rag Darbari Kanada, the night-time raga, with Akbar Khan accompanied by Pandit Mahapurush Misra on tablas. Together they take a journey, exploring this all-time classic during 80 minutes of song. Khan digs deep on the awesome introductory alap, then they let loose together on the second section, with a unending flow of stunning improvisations. This is a fantastic recording of the Bangladeshi master musician and a major reference in the long history of Indian classical music.
