The legendary sarod player died on the 18 June 2009, aged 87, inside the music centre he built in the 70s in San Francisco. Son of the master musician Ustad Allauddin Khan, Ali Akbar Khan had immense talent and a modest manner, and devoted his whole life to music. His son Alam says that the day before he died, surrounded by his students and family, the maestro insisted, despite being very weak by then, they bring him a harmonium so that he could give one last music lesson.
